…except when it’s not.
Do you think Moftiss would be thrilled that someone defaced St. Bart’s in the name of a fictional character on a television show they produce?
For God’s sake. Vandalism is not the image we want for our fandom.
Chalk, flyers, buttons, t-shirts, yes. Spray paint, permanent markers, etchings? No. Write about in-universe characters spray-painting buildings. Don’t do it here in the real world.
Yes. I’ve opted out of commenting on this movement thus far because I am not as eloquent as others. MadLori is right.
I would like to comment on one thing: I’ve seen a lot of “Oh, Banksy can do it but we can’t? What makes him better than us?” Really? REALLY? You’re gonna pull the “but he got to do it” card? What Banksy does is still illegal. If he ever gets caught, he will get in trouble.
I say run with this idea, but please don’t deface things.
Thankfully, most of what I’ve seen on my dash has been of the temporary, removable, or “mocked up on a computer” variety: fliers, graphics, etc. But yeah, if I do see anything that looks remotely like it’s defacing public property? Not reblogging, and possibly reporting, if I recognise the location where the damage was done.
We are a truly awesome (and law-abiding) fandom. Let’s please stay that way, mmkay?
